What's the Difference Between SEO and Paid Advertising?

Both SEO and paid advertising can help more people find your business online — but they work in very different ways.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the practice of improving your website so that it naturally appears higher in search results when people search for things related to your business. It's often called "organic" or "free" traffic — though it requires an investment of time and effort. The results build gradually but tend to be long-lasting.

Paid advertising (such as Google Ads) allows you to pay to appear at the top of search results immediately. You set a budget, choose your keywords, and your ad appears when people search for them. The moment you stop paying, the ads stop showing.

Which is better?

Both have their place. Paid ads are great for immediate visibility, launching a promotion, or quickly targeting a very specific audience. SEO is better for building a sustainable, long-term online presence that doesn't depend on an ongoing advertising budget.

For most small businesses, a combination of both — or starting with SEO as a solid foundation — is the most cost-effective approach. We'd be happy to advise on what makes most sense for your business and budget.
