What Is DNS and Why Does It Matter?

DNS stands for Domain Name System, and it's essentially the internet's address book.

When someone types your web address into a browser (like www.yourbusiness.co.uk), theircomputer needs to find out where your website actually lives on the internet. DNS is the system that translates your human-readable domain name into the technical IP address of your web

server — all in a fraction of a second.

You don't need to manage DNS yourself — that's something we handle as part of your setup with CyberWebPAGE. But it helps to understand a couple of terms you might hear:

Nameservers: These tell the internet which company is managing your domain's DNS settings. When you use CyberWebPAGE, your nameservers point to us.

DNS propagation: When changes are made to DNS settings (for example, pointing your domain to a new server), it can take up to 24–48 hours for those changes to be visible everywhere in the world. This is completely normal.

If you ever experience issues with your domain or email after a change, propagation time is usually the reason — and it resolves on its own.
